Up a steep country road, deep in the Dargle Valley in the midlands, and covered in ivy, you will find a picture perfect country chapel.   The Crab Apple Chapel was built in 1992 by Barend Booysen for the community. Sunday after Sunday, come rain, wind or shine, he would witness the community worshipping under the Crab Apple trees on the corner of his property so he then decided to build them their own chapel, Crab Apple Chapel. He sourced the windows and doors from a demolished Dutch Reformed Church in Pietermaritzburg and as the chapel's uses expanded to host weddings on Saturdays, he added the apse with it's large feature windows allowing in the warm glowing sun and letting the natural surrounds of forests and farmlands form a glorious backdrop.

The chapel seats up to 170 people on church pews. There are fully stocked ablution facilities and onsite parking with attendants. It is well signposted and electricity is supplied. It is 20 kms from Howick.  Your own pastor will be welcomed as Crab Apple Chapel is multi-denominational. As Crab Apple endeavours to preserve the area's natural beauty, please feel free to release any nature friendly substances such as petals, bubbles, butterflies or birds on exiting the chapel but please avoid anything that will need to be cleared away or could harm the environment. As the chapel is situated at the end of a 3 km dirt road should the Dargle experience very heavy rainfall, which happens occassionally in the months of January and February, the road may become muddy.

The hire of Crab Apple Chapel includes: the pews, lectern and a red carpet laid down the aisle. The florist chosen for the occasion is welcome to decorate the chapel with appropriate flowers and ribbons.

Because Crab Apple recognises that our neighbours have chosen to live in the Dargle precisely because it is away from the noise and congestion of the city, we cannot allow any function to run into the evening, the gardens are only available during daylight hours and no loud music is to be played. We would also appreciate you leaving the gardens and its surrounds as you have found them.

Should you be looking for accommodation in the area, please remember Crab Apple Cottages are just up the hill. For further details contact Helen and Barend on Cell: 082 337 2025 or 082 787 0797 Fax: 086 424 1033 Email: info@crabapple.co.za.
